Iron Man EASY Guitar Lesson Tutorial – Black Sabbath – Power Chords for Beginners
In this guitar lesson, we will be looking at the Iron Man TAB and learning how to play this Black Sabbath classic one step at a time and in full. Iron Man is an extremely popular song in the world of guitar. A large percentage of guitarists learn this one at some point but when I say learn, I mean, they learn the main guitar riff rather than the song in entirety. Thats not what we are going to do here.
Iron Man is an almost six minute track so in theory, theres a lot to learn. Dont be put off by the running time. Yes, theres quite a few parts to work through but theres also a lot of repetition and for the most part, Iron Man is actually quite an easy song to learn and master all the way through.
Iron Man was released in the year 1970 as part of Black Sabbaths Paranoid album. The main riff which guitar players, Sabbath fans and rock and metal fans know so well was described by Ozzy Osbourne as sounding like a big iron bloke walking about when he first heard Tony Iommi play it in rehearsal but the story told by the song ended up being much more interesting than that.
An interesting plot indeed but all we are concerned about here is the guitar parts performed and recorded by Tony Iommi. Next, we shall learn those guitar parts one by one, starting naturally with the intro.

Why Is Learning Lead Guitar So Hard
Learning how to play a lead guitar is difficult because there are so many different techniques to learn. The lead guitarist must be able to play various types of bends, slides, legato, string skipping, and other techniques. If you learn these techniques, you will be able to play a much more difficult lead guitar if you want to play a variety of genres. What is a lead guitarist? Lead guitarist is responsible for creating a distinct sound in a band. The rest of the band frequently plays in exaggerated lines, but they provide the extra sound. solos, which are also used, highlight a players ability and skill. Is it easy to learn the guitar lead? In other words, there will come a time when you think youve nailed down a song key only to discover that theres a curveball or a chord in the song that doesnt lend itself to the scale youre playing. As a result, learning how to play the lead guitar may appear more difficult than it is. You will, however, be able to play a lead guitar with distinction as long as you practice and wait for your chance.

Guitar Lessons For Kids #: Sounds Like Iron Man
Iron Man was written and released by the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath in 1979. Their legendary guitarist, Tony Iommi wrote the signature riff. When lead singer Ozzy Osbourne first heard Iommi play it on guitar, Osbourne said, That sounds like a big iron bloke walking about.
While many kids think this signature riff was written as Tony Starks theme song, the song originally had no connection to the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Of course, anyone who has seen the Iron Man movies released since 2008 knows this legendary heavy metal riff plays during the final credits.
Iron Man Tab Main Guitar Riff
We all love a power chord based riff. Well I hope you do because youre about to learn one. Heres the TAB.
We start with a B power chord and then we gradually move higher up the fretboard before descending again. This is a nice and simple riff with an easy to follow rhythm.
When you get to that faster part toward the end, you have a choice of either strumming each and every chord or using some sliding between the chords for a strum and slide combination. I do both. Depends what mood Im in. Theres more room for sliding experimentation in this riff too but thats up to you. The above TAB shows you how to play the main riff that is heard both right after the intro and at different points throughout the song also.

How Does Tony Iommi Tune His Guitar
First, he started down-tuning his guitar, to D# and C# standard. This lowered the tension against his fingers, making it easier for him to play for longer periods of time. Iommi and the rest of Black Sabbath found out that these lower tunings also made the music sound heavier, and an entire genre of music was born.

Pre Second Guitar Solo
Just to annoy you, Im going to move ever so slightly away from the chronological approach here.
Iron Man ends instrumentally. Theres a second guitar solo which is surrounded by more rigid parts.
Prior to the second guitar solo, the first thing we hear is the same sort of thing we heard at the very start of the song with the whammy bar. Thats followed by a riff based section.
That riff part is followed by the guitar solo which we will get to shortly.
After the conclusion of the second guitar solo, we return to the same riff that weve just seen to close the song and then the very final moment of Iron Man looks like this.
These parts are once more, fairly self explanatory. Theres a fiddly bit in there but everyone should be able to get that down with a bit of good old practice.

How To Play The Iron Man Intro Riff
This is the main riff of the song Iron Man by Black Sabbath. This is the guitar part that happens during the verse part of the song. If you listen to the song closely, youll notice that when theres no vocal, no singing, the guitar plays power chords.
Then, when the vocals enter the guitar plays the same root notes as the power chords, but only single notes. Furthermore, if you listen to the recording the guitar plays with vibrato.
Its when you wiggle your finger on the fret so the pitch wavers slightly. Play the whole song with down strokes. The part marked in red is a slide you strum the first chord and slide your left hand down the fret board. In the second part this same part is a hammer-on.
The song actually starts with an open E note on the 6th string that runs a couple of bars. The string will be bent and release to produce that airplane engine-like sound. Then the actual intro riff comes in.
The first note is the B5 power chord with the first finger on the 7th fret of the 6th string and the third finger on the 9th fret of the A string .
It will then followed by the D5 power chord and slides to the 12th fret or position forming the E5 power chord. and the final note/chord is the E5 power chord on a different position. In the songsterr diagram its in the first position, open E position with the first finger fretting the 2nd fret of the D string and open B string.

Iron Man Tab Instrumental Interlude
If were attacking Iron Man in chronological order, the next new part that we must learn is this little instrumental interlude thing. Nice and simple with a kindly slow and easy rhythm. Heres the TAB.
This part has a cool vibe to it. Very fun to play but not much guidance needed. Just follow the TAB as you see it or follow the rhythm in the recording.
This part happens more than once in the song. You hear it both toward the start and toward the end. A lot goes on between their appearances but youll know it when you hear it. The last note rings out slightly differently the second time around but thats the only difference.

Yours truly! Will Ripley
Iron Man was released with little mainstream attention on Black Sabbaths 2nd studio album Paranoid in 1970. It had a cult following and grew in success over the years eventually earning a spot on Rolling Stone magazines 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and even a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2000. The only thing this song has in common with the Iron Man movies and comics is its title. The song tells the tale of a man who travels into the future and witnesses the apocalypse. Upon his return to the present to warn humanity, he is turned to steel by a magnetic field and ends up becoming the cause of the destruction he had witnessed.
*This song will introduce power chords in a challenging yet straightforward way. Make sure youre in tune, youre sitting straight are warmed up.
The power chord is always the same formula take some breaks & stretch. Were taking our fingers to the gym!
You can keep your power chord shape pressed down and even slide between the power chords like this example.
*Dont forget about the basic ground rules listen to the song, get it in your head so you know what youre trying to achieve.

Iron Man Guitar Solo Tab
Next, we have the Iron Man guitar solo TAB. This is a fairly fast paced solo depending on who you ask but I wouldnt say its crazy. This one is fairly tame and easy to piece together a bar at a time . Heres the TAB.
The thing with this guitar solo for me at least is that it isnt what you think about when Iron Man springs to mind. Its kind of like the opposite of a song like Beat It where the guitar solo provides a big chunk of the songs identity.
This guitar solo sounds amazing but its one where you could switch it out for either your own or, some improvisation work if you enjoy that sort of thing like I do.
If youre going to do that, youll want to base it around the C sharp minor pentatonic scale modes and youll want to remain closely and tightly locked into that rhythm like the original solo is.
You may have noticed that the end of the guitar solo is missing from the TAB. Fear not. Here it is.
I wanted to separate this final part because of my advice on crafting your own solo. If you do decide to do your own thing, youll still want to keep this last moment the same as the record so be sure that whatever it is youre doing leads nicely into the little eleventh fret part. Just trust me.

How Do I Read Guitar Tab
Guitar tablaturemore commonly known as guitar tabis a simple way for guitarists to learn how to play chords, melodies, and songs. If you write original music, its also a great way to communicate your musical ideas to other musicians.
The horizontal lines represent the guitar strings, and the numbers represent the frets. The most challenging aspect of reading the guitar tab is the string order because its counter-intuitive. The low E-string is at the bottom, and the high E-string is at the top.

Iron Man Second Guitar Solo Tab
How To Play Iron Man On Guitar
Theres only one more piece to the Iron Man puzzle and thats the second guitar solo. Want some TAB? Here you go.
This guitar solo is shorter than the previous but like the last one, you can choose to craft your own if you like. This time, in E minor / G. What I would say though is that some of the bends in this one are quite characterful so you may want to keep them in.
Another thing worth pointing out is that in the recording, there is a second lead guitar track sitting alongside the main lead track. Dont worry about this too much. It contributes to the sound on the recording but what you need to learn is in the TAB above.

Nobody Wants Him Section
Ive labelled this next part as the nobody wants him section but you can think of it as a chorus if you like.
This part always felt a little like one of the parts from Paranoid to me. We have some very basic whole note power chord work to do and then theres a very nice little lick. Heres the TAB.
The lick that you see there is based around the B minor pentatonic scale but you have a couple of extra notes in there too. Can you use these extra notes in your pentatonic based music? I think youll find thats a question that gets answered rather quickly.

I really thought that the song Iron Man by the Black Sabbath was written for the Marvel comic book hero but after reading a couple of trivia about the songs, looks like it has really nothing to do with Anthony Tony Stark.
But considering that Iron Man the hero was created in 1963 and the song in 1970, it makes sense to associate the song to the hero, right?
This song really is a sci-fi story and idea of the Ozzy Osbourne and the band.
Iron Man is from their second album called Paranoid which was released in the year 1970.

Main Riff Behind The Vocals
The guitar part that sits behind the vocals during the verse sections sounds very similar to the main riff that we just learned but its a little thinner. Heres the TAB.
Perhaps it looks familiar too. The TAB for this part is the same as the previous part only weve ditched the fifth notes from the power chords and now we are just playing the individual root notes.
Everything is the same in terms of rhythm but you should break out the good old hammer ons and pull offs when you get to the 10 9 10 9 part.
The last thing to remember with this part is that you need to revert back to the main power chord part when theres no vocals on top.
